Welcome to my first blog post!
Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton
Librarians hate me – I dog ear pages, crack the spines and worst of all, I always write in the margins of books. When there’s a sentence or two that you fall in love with, it feels too important to just let it get lost in the pages. So to save them their sanity, and myself a scolding, now I buy a lot of used books. And when I find notes in the margins from readers before, it’s even more special. Aside from *ing or underlining my favourite passages, I mostly find myself arguing with an author’s ideas. With a few shelves full of books and a few more in piles on the floor I wondered what to do with all my scribbles.
So in an attempt to continue the one-sided conversation, I’ve created That Bookish Girl to fill with the ideas a book presents, not an opinion or review of the book itself.
Focusing on my favourite books, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as what I’m reading right now: I’ve been fascinated with learning about Russia for the past few years and have a love for Russian fiction as well. I’ve recently been reading more about American politics too. I enjoy what Stephen F. Cohen, Naomi Klein and Chris Hedges have to say, to name drop a few favourites.
I often read the opposing sides to my personal views as well to really see the full picture. I think it’s fair to say there may be some very passionate posts in the near future. I’m looking at you, Masha Gessen, Ben Mezrich and Garry Kasparov.
My favourite works of fiction have to be Boris Pasternak’s Dr. Zhivago, Oscar Wilde’s A Picture of Dorian Gray, Tom Robbin’s Still Life with Woodpecker, Sophie Dahl’s The Man with the Dancing Eyes, and Anton Chekhov’s A Man in a Shell, to name a few. I love writers with a dark sense of humour. We’ll get more into that! And since they’re all (quirky) love stories I guess there’s no hiding I’m a closet romantic from you!
I’m so excited to be sharing my inner world of books with you. Stay tuned for posts about great ideas from great books.
